The Indian action and comedy film, “Welcome to Karachi” is going to be released on 28th May, 2015. The initial release date was 21st May, 2015 but then it was delayed for one week.
The movie is produced by Uzair Junejo and Vashu Bhagnani and directed by Ashish Mohan. The lead roles are played by Arshad Warsi and Jackky Bhagnani. The movie is an adaptation of Hollywood movie “Dumb and Dumber”. Pakistani actors like Ayyub Khoso and Adnan shah are also included in the cast of the movie.
The movie is produced in Birmingham, Bradford and Wales. The sets were created to look like Karachi. During the production of the movie the actors were mistaken for actual Taliban and the shooting was stopped by Scotland Yard.
Jackky Bhagnani’s role was initially given to Irrfan Khan but he had to step back because of some other commitments. The story is about two Indians who are lost in Karachi and don’t have their passports. They are kidnapped by Taliban and to survive they have to act stupid until they find a way to get back to India.
The movie suffered many hurdles. First the Scotland Yard interference, then their Karachi set got stolen at Birmingham airport. Now there is a legal issue. The song of the movie “Lala Lala Lori, Daru Ki Katori” shows liquor consumption and depicts a nursery rhyme. So a petition has been filed in Delhi high Court to ban it. The reason behind the petition is that it will have a negative impact especially on children. The producers of the film and government of Delhi have decided to remove the song from the movie and stop advertising it on TV.
The director of the movie, Mohan says that he would have loved to shoot the movie in Karachi but due to risks he couldn’t. He has visited Karachi himself and said that his experience was amazing. He said that Karachi isn’t different from Bombay. The people are the same, they speak same language and even the weather is the same.
The biggest problem with Karachi is the negative image which has been created over media. Mohan says that the he had an amazing time during his visit and the people welcomed him warmly. They were very hospitable and kind.
Mohan wishes that his movie would change the perception of Karachi. He wants to show positive aspect of the city and is hopeful that it will benefit the image both in India and Pakistan.
